DRAWN HOLY FACE IMAGE, WHICH HAD BEEN TOUCHED TO VERONICA’S VEIL IN THE VATICAN.
THIS IS THE COUNTENANCE WHICH WAS REVEALED DURING THE 1849 “MIRACLE OF THE VATICAN.”
33 AD, The Passion of Our Lord – “As Our Lord carries His Cross to Calvary, man and wood fall to the ground. A woman named Berenicia (now known as St. Veronica) courageously pushes through the soldiers and crowd to reach Jesus. She falls on her knees before Him and presents her veil. Jesus takes the veil, wipes His bleeding face, and returns it with gratitude. After Berenicia escapes the chaos of the crowd, she looks at her veil to see that miraculously, Our Lord has left an image of His Face on the veil. It is only afterward that Berenicia is known by the name of Veronica, which name is given from the words VERA ICON, meaning “true portrait”, to commemorate her bravery. Veronica later passes the relic of the veil to Clement I (the 3rd successor of St. Peter). The Holy Veil is hidden away in the catacombs for the next 3 centuries during the persecutions of the Church. The Holy Veil is finally placed in the church that was constructed over the tomb of St. Peter, which is now the Basilica of St. Peter. Throughout the centuries, Veronica’s Holy Veil has remained there where it is protected and venerated to this day.

The Holy Face Devotion (Reparation to the Holy Face) is no less than the very pinnacle of all devotions. (Devotions are forms of popular piety outside the liturgy, which is, however, their origin and aim.) The Devotion is a most efficacious tool, requested by God, for man to do his part to assist Christ in reclaiming our Church and times. Our Lord revealed that His wounded, Holy Face, as exterior object of adoration in reparation for offenses against the first three commandments, is the greatest grace second only to the Sacraments.
It is perhaps only in this era, from a hindsight perspective, and with the benefit of successive devotions to Christ and Mary, each augmenting and complementing the pinnacle Holy Face Revelations, that the full treasury of this Reparation to the Godhead may now be appreciated. It is only now, in this seemingly (new) "worst of times," that the effects of neglecting the devotion are being realized, as well as the ever-increasing necessity of it as a remedy.
Weekly Reparation to the Holy Face of Jesus has been observed at Ss. Peter and Paul since 2021. It is held every Sunday, 3:00-4:00 pm, in church. Participation is welcomed and encouraged. Please join us. The prayers of reparation are provided. If you have questions or would like more information, feel free to call Marie @ 507-387-3000.
